Northern Statement on Recent Indictment of Former Employee

September 28, 2016:  In June 2014, Northern Children’s Services (Northern) learned, through its own internal investigation, that a former employee may have engaged in financial impropriety involving Northern’s funds.  We quickly notified law enforcement, and worked closely with the authorities in support of the investigation.

Sonya McQuillar, the former Northern employee, has been indicted on three federal charges:  two counts of “Theft from a Program Receiving Federal Funds”, and one count of “Lying to the F.B.I.”.

We want to reassure you that this unfortunate criminal act in no way affected the children and families we serve.

Since this time, Northern’s leadership and Board of Trustees and staff have taken critical action steps to ensure that this unfortunate act will never be repeated .Northern has implemented new controls and brought on new team members in the areas of financial administration and compliance to make sure this action will not be repeated.

Northern is committed to sound financial stewardship and to delivering maximum support for our children, families and communities.  We are grateful to those who supported us in the investigation of this matter, and to law enforcement officials for their time and attention.

NCS This Month: Giving Back to the Community

A Message from our President and CEO

Just like a garden, children begin as seedlings who blossom when lovingly nurtured, they have adequate room to grow, and they receive plenty of light. Thanks to Northern’s incredibly compassionate staff, sprawling 6-acre campus, and the August sunshine, these kids have shot up like rays of light, beaming from the gym to the pool.

NCS this Month: Celebrating Staff and the Summer

A Message from our President and CEO

The July sun is radiating over NCS, and its warmth can be felt all over campus, as I watch the children and staff engaging in summertime fun. I want to shine the light on our Partial and Wellness team leaders, an incredibly patient group of staff, whose daily contributions have resulted in incredible progress made by our “littles.”  Thank you for the efforts that you all contribute day in and day out.  (more…)

NCS this Month: Celebrating Milestones and Success

A Message from our President and CEO

June is a very special month here at Northern.  It is a month of celebrating the successes of our children, youth, families and staff.  As I approach my own milestone on June 22nd  – my 1-year anniversary – I am reminded of why Northern is so exceptional.   When I started last year, so did many of  the children attending our summer camp and young mothers in our residential programs.  In just under twelve short months,  I see the progress of these children, youth, and families.  From progress in therapy to proms to graduations from elementary, middle, and high school and Northern’s programs, these milestones are great reminders about why we do the work that we do. NCS this Month: Celebrating Foster Care Awareness Month

A Message from our President and CEO

In May, we celebrate National Foster Care Awareness Month.  At Northern, this observance gives us the opportunity to pause and reflect on our work to find wonderful resource parents for children and youth under the care of the Department of Human Services, and a safe and warm home on our beautiful 6-acre Roxborough campus.  Leaving out the neglect, physical and emotional abuse, loss, and other trauma that these beautiful young people have experienced, the singular fact of being removed from the home of their parent(s), the relatives who raised them, or from one or more previous foster care settings is a traumatic event in and of itself.   (more…)
