NCS this Month: Celebrating Foster Care Awareness Month

A Message from our President and CEO

In May, we celebrate National Foster Care Awareness Month.  At Northern, this observance gives us the opportunity to pause and reflect on our work to find wonderful resource parents for children and youth under the care of the Department of Human Services, and a safe and warm home on our beautiful 6-acre Roxborough campus.  Leaving out the neglect, physical and emotional abuse, loss, and other trauma that these beautiful young people have experienced, the singular fact of being removed from the home of their parent(s), the relatives who raised them, or from one or more previous foster care settings is a traumatic event in and of itself.   (more…)

NCS this Month: New Beginnings and a Fresh Start To Spring!

A Message from our President and CEO

March 20th marked the first day of spring.  Spring represents rebirth and new beginnings and our campus is already blooming in color and beauty! For Northern, this is a particularly significant symbol this year. We are emerging from a winter that brought us many challenges, but also brought us many wonderful reminders of why we do the work that we do, and why it is so important for us to continue serving communities across Philadelphia and Chester.    (more…)

Sunshine Shout-Out: Kia Butler, Director of Foster Care, Honored With Prestigious MLK Award

“Change begins with us.”

Kia Butler, our Director of Foster Care,  said after receiving the 2016 Drum Major for the Justice Award at the Martin Luther King Celebration brunch at West Chester University’s Sykes Student Union on Thursday, January 21, 2016.  The Drum Major for the Justice Award is a prestigious honor that is awarded to individuals who follow in the footsteps of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., by dedicating their life’s work to social justice issues.  (more…)
