Merrick Hall

Northern is proud to announce it has been awarded a $60,000 grant from The W. W. Smith Charitable Trust to support Dignity in Shelter: Completing Critical Supports for Young Families, a project focused on completing renovations to transitional housing suites for parenting youth aging out of foster care.

The one-year grant will support critical repairs, kitchen appliances, and essential furnishings in two residential buildings on Northern’s campus—helping create safe, trauma-informed living spaces for young mothers and their children who are at imminent risk of homelessness. These improvements move Northern closer to completing a larger, multi-year renovation effort to ensure families can transition into dignified, fully equipped homes .

The renovated housing will serve families enrolled in Generations II, Northern’s transitional housing program for young mothers ages 18–21 and their children. In addition to stable housing, families receive wraparound supports including case management, parenting education, life-skills coaching, behavioral health services, and housing navigation.
